about

Kathryn was riding a Greyhound bus in Saskatchewan one winter when a truck driver whose truck had broken down in the middle of the bald frozen prairie flagged the bus down, got on, sprawled across a couple of seats (as one does when one has never been on a bus before) and proceeded to loudly phone his boss to try to explain, perhaps unsuccessfully, why he abandoned his truck. Kathryn scrawled as much of his side of the conversation as she had time for on a page of the book she was reading and later referred to her notes to write these lyrics.

STC stands for Saskatchewan Transportation Corporation, a provincial government entity that used to subsidize Greyhound in Saskatchewan but was recently cancelled by Saskatchewan’s right wing government.

lyrics

Uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh
Ooh
Uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh
Ooh

I’ve been driving fifteen years you know
He said I’ve been driving fifteen years you know
Amarillo Nebraska Amarillo Kansas

I nearly froze out there he said
I nearly froze out there he said
I nearly froze out there he said

It’s the saddest sight to see
Laid bare we all could see

Sixty five
Fifty five
Forty five
Thirty five
Twenty five

I’ve been driving fifteen years you know
He said I’ve been driving fifteen years you know
Amarillo Nebraska Amarillo Kansas

I nearly froze out there he said
I nearly froze out there he said

Yellow fingers clasped the phone
It’s like he’s in that bus alone

Sixty five
Fifty five
Forty five
Thirty five
Twenty five

Uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh
Ooh
Uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh
Ooh

about

Blue Dirt Girl Vancouver, British Columbia

NO STREET SIGNS NO STRAIGHT LINES (06.21.23)“a crafted blend of musical styles.. oddly familiar..sound is old and new at once.” “Sutherland’s gorgeous voice strong & nuanced she doesn’t want to fit into a single style. One moment she reminds of classic Dolly Parton in another the energetic cries of Grace Slick.”
“..half blues but with a dash of Pink Floyd.”
