about

My favourite writers are people who make me think “I could write like that”, and then when I try it I find out I’m wrong.

Sophie Yendole is a Vancouver poet who has read her work at several of our shows. I don’t know what inspired the lyrics for Speculate but it’s a safe bet that at least some inspiration came from hearing Sophie’s poems. They’re stories, and maybe Speculate is my attempt at writing a story in a Sophiesque style.

It turns out I can’t write like her, but I’m OK with that.

lyrics

There’s a road from the house to the beach
And beside the road there’s a ravine
And at the bottom of the ravine there’s a Ford from the 50s
With a tree growing through the windshield
No one remembers how it got there
Which leaves us room to speculate

Leaves us room to speculate

I can picture it being pushed over the edge by a pack of kids
They laugh and yell as our Ford
Cuts a swathe through the blackberries
It probably belonged to one of their parents
Or maybe an older sibling

Leaves us room to speculate
It leaves us room to speculate

It hadn’t been driven in years and it wasn’t worth fixing
If instead they had put it in a shed
It would be worth fixing now
But it’s at the bottom of a ravine
With a tree growing through it
So… yeah

Leaves us room to speculate
It leaves us room to speculate

about

Blue Dirt Girl Vancouver, British Columbia

NO STREET SIGNS NO STRAIGHT LINES (06.21.23)“a crafted blend of musical styles.. oddly familiar..sound is old and new at once.” “Sutherland’s gorgeous voice strong & nuanced she doesn’t want to fit into a single style. One moment she reminds of classic Dolly Parton in another the energetic cries of Grace Slick.”
“..half blues but with a dash of Pink Floyd.”
